Only 4 years old and traditions are already starting to take fold at our small chess club. The Start-of-Semester tournament has taken place 7 times now, and on this beautiful day in February, an eighth time was added to this streak. Traditions are also there to be broken though, as this was the first time we organised a tournament under our new name, Schwarzer König, and also our first time we organised a tournament in the small (but, of course, cosy) room E22. With literally no room to spare, 45 players sat down for their first round of what would become an exciting tournament…

Talking about breaking traditions, there was one very special participant with us today… Julien Joly came straight from our rival club La Dame Blanche and has participated several times in our yearly clash against them. So, if anything, our players had one goal today: one versus all, all versus Julien. And… we failed. With a very nice performance of 6.5/7, Julien won the tournament by tie-break from Anton. Unsurprisingly, Anton was also the only one that could withstand his play when they drew their game in the fifth round. Luckily, this tournament doesn’t count for the next Polychamps, otherwise we would already be one point behind…

One thing that we see during every tournament at the beginning of a semester, is loads of new faces. Less than half of the participants in today’s tournament had participated before and it is great to see how many new people are excited for chess. I am already looking forward to the upcoming semester and would like to see some new faces taking over from the “old guard”.

Because that “old guard” was also present today and going strong as usual. Place 2 and 3 were taken by Anton and Yun, both two of our most active players, with Yun now having played 76 games (!) in all his tournaments combined. In fact, there are now eleven players who played more than 40 games in our tournaments. While new faces are exciting, it is also great to see how people keep joining our events and keep enjoying themselves while doing so. At least that means we are doing something right, right?

Below you can find the final standings and two small pictures of the event 🙂 Looking forward to seeing you all in our next events!
